How to Control Anxiety

How to Control Anxiety

Learning how to control anxiety is a vital part of being an adult. There aren’t many adults who don’t struggle with how to control anxiety at some point or another. Whether you’re suffering from near-constant low levels of anxiety or acute anxiety related to certain events or items in your life, learning how to control anxiety can help you on many levels.

For instance, learning how to control anxiety can help you prevent anxiety-related physical and mental issues, as well as panic attacks. If you’re already struggling from serious anxiety, you already know that it’s difficult to learn how to control anxiety. But this doesn’t mean it’s impossible or not worth your while. Learning how to control anxiety for many people starts with reducing stress in general, but may also involve mind/body work, herbal supplements, and even different types of therapy. Here’s what you need to know about learning how to control anxiety:

Reduce Overall Levels of Stress

Reducing your stress levels in general is the first step to learning how to control anxiety. You can make some of your anxiety disappear when you effectively learn how to control stress in your life. Things like learning to manage your time more wisely can help you learn how to control anxiety that’s related to the work place and your to-do list. Also, learning to let go of things you can’t control anyway will help you reduce stress in general.

Figure out what’s triggering the general stress in your life, and learn to get away from some of those triggers. For some people, this means cutting off unhealthy relationships or learning to delegate so that they have less to do at work. For others, it means just taking time every weekend to spend doing something they love so that they don’t feel overwhelmed by all the things they have to do. Learn what reduces stress in your own life, and then do those things to keep stress from building back up.

Use Mind/Body Work

Mind/Body work can help you strengthen the connections between your body and your mind while releasing stress at the same time. Mind/body connections are vital for stress and anxiety management because if your mind and body are intimately connected, you can more easily take charge of yourself during times when one or the other is starting to show symptoms of anxiety.

My favorite type of mind/body work is yoga, which teaches you to relax your body while strengthening it and which teaches valuable anxiety management techniques like deep, intentional breathing. I suggest that you take a yoga class if you’re a beginner, though, since a qualified instructor can help you focus more fully and ensure that you’re doing the poses – asanas – correctly, whereas with a video at home, you may do things incorrectly and risk injury.

Use Herbal Supplements

Many herbal supplements can help you on your quest to learn how to control anxiety. Passionflower, kava kava, chamomile, verbena, and cowslip can all help you relax your mind and body, and many have been shown to help balance the hormones that cause extra stress and anxiety, so that you can more easily prevent and control anxiety. If you’re starting to feel particularly anxious, I suggest taking proprietary anti-stress herbal blends that can help you combat the problem naturally.

I also like to keep herbal teas around. Having a cup of hot chamomile and lemon balm tea each evening is a bit of an anti-anxiety ritual for me. The very act of wrapping my hands around a warm mug of tea is calming, and the herbs in the tea are one of my main strategies for how to control anxiety in my own life!
