How to Stop Worrying

Wondering how to stop worrying? There are lots of great “how to stop worrying” techniques out there that can help you get rid of your worries for good. Worrying a little bit is natural, but if your worries are taking over your life and your mind, it’s a good idea to learn how to stop worrying. Here are just a few techniques that can help you teach your brain how to stop worrying so that you can live in the moment and really enjoy life:

Worry about it later

Keep a “worry sheet” on which you can write down things you’re worried about. When a new worry pops into your head, write it down on the sheet, and tell yourself you’ll worry about it later. Don’t pick up the sheet unless you have to write down a new worry, and if you have to, create a new sheet every time you start to worry, so that you don’t see those older written-down worries and start up over them all over again. By learning how to stop worrying in the present, you’ll eventually stop worrying altogether because you’ll find out how unhelpful it is and how great it is to actually live in the present.

Take control of your thoughts

So, whenever you embark on a new adventure, be it a business venture or a simple weekend getaway, worry for just a few minutes. Let your brain figure out what the worst case scenario would be, and then do what you can to prepare for it. Once that’s done, you can put away your worries because chances are likely that you’ll never actually see that worst case scenario come true!

Stay busy

Learning how to stop worrying is about learning to live in the present, and there’s no better way to live in the present than to keep busy. If you have a long to-do list and lots of things to keep you going, then you won’t have time to worry! List some of your most important goals, and start trying to achieve them. Don’t keep yourself so busy that you can’t find time to relax, but make sure you’re always working towards a couple of major life goals at a time so you don’t have a chance to worry.

Talk with someone

One of the best ways to get rid of worries is to talk them out. If you’re really concerned about something, talk with a friend or family member who will give you a realistic view of things. You don’t need an overly positive sugar-coated view, though, so make sure you’re talking to the right person. Instead, find someone who will counter your worries with realistic thoughts about what might actually happen in the future.
